Arguably the largest health concern worldwide, cancer is still being researched so we can better understand and prevent it. Certain risk factors like smoking and increased intake of processed meat have already been proven. However, recent studies have found that a relatively common condition called Peyronie’s disease (a condition that causes curved erections) may also be linked to cancer.
So, is there a link between Peyronie’s disease and cancer?
What Is Peyronie’s Disease?
Peyronie’s disease is a connective tissue disorder that causes curved, often painful erections. Some of its most common symptoms are:
- Scar tissue or lumps under the skin of the penis;
- Curved, painful erections;
- Problems getting and maintaining an erection (ED)
- Loss of penis width or girth.
These symptoms can often go away on their own but, in rare cases, they can become gradually worse. In these cases, your doctor may prescribe you oral medication or recommend surgery.
Peyronie’s Disease and Cancer
A study published in the American Journal of Reproductive medicine examined the connection between Peyronie’s disease and cancer and found a significant correlation between this condition and at least three types of cancer. The study examined the data of 1.5 million men and found that men with this disease had a 29% increased risk of melanoma and skin cancer, 40% increased the risk of testicle cancer, and 40% increased the risk of stomach cancer.
Furthermore, these men were at a slightly higher risk for all types of cancer. As more than six percent of European men over 30 years have this condition, this could be an important discovery for the diagnosis and early detection of cancer in men.
Conclusion
Although the link between Peyronie’s disease and cancer is still in the early phases of research, there is enough evidence to take this condition seriously. If you notice these symptoms contact your doctor for a professional diagnosis.
